The Neuaubing Memorial Site is located on the site of a former forced labour camp in the Munich district of Neuaubing. The camp was one of well over 400 forced labour camps within the city limits of Munich. It belonged to the Reichsbahn, the German state railway, which operated a repair workshop in Neuaubing. From the spring of 1942, the Reichsbahn housed up to 1,000 people in the barracks. Mostly from Poland and the Soviet Union, they had been forcibly deported to Munich from the occupied territories as forced labourers.

The eight surviving barracks are most notable as a historic ensemble of buildings. Today, the site is home to a kindergarten, a recreational farm for children and adolescents, and workshops and studios for various artists and craftspeople. It is intended to be a place where everyday encounters, culture of remembrance and history education come together. Two of the barracks will be used for an exhibition and for workshops for a deeper engagement with the history. The memorial is expected to open in 2025 as an annex to the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism.

In its main building on Munich’s Königsplatz, the Munich Documentation Center examines the origins of the Nazi Party (NSDAP), which was founded in Munich, and the city’s role in the Nazi dictatorship. In addition, artistic interventions and temporary exhibitions offer new perspectives on history and current social and political issues. It is intended that the Neuaubing Memorial Site will also follow this principle and deal in particular with the themes of Nazi forced labour and unfree labour in a contemporary context.

The Neuaubing Memorial Site is open to the public. One of the barracks can be visited on a guided tour. Guided tours in various languages can be booked for groups via the website of the Munich Documentation Center. These tours are free of charge for school classes and students.

To accompany the creation of the place of remembrance digitally, the history „Departure Neuaubing. European Forced Labour Stories“ online. „focuses on the international contexts of history and develops narrative and artistic formats that deal with Nazi forced labour and its lasting effects. The app Forced Abroad uses a playable diary to illustrate what the time as a forced labourer meant to the young Dutchman Jan de Boer. Forced Abroad can be downloaded free of charge from the Google Playstore Google Playstore and the Apple Store.
